Darrell Woodard was born December 10 1954. He passed away December of 2020, due to complications of COVID 19 from a fire call. Three other firefighters that were with him also contacted COVID. Darrell was the one who passed from it. All the other firefighters are all ok.
Unfortunately he left a big void in a lot of people’s lives. He was an individual who stood out during his lifetime due to his commitment to the community and the needs and service of others.
Darrell was an active firefighter for 42 years, Chief of the Savannah Volunteer Fire Department since 1984, and served as a Jackson County Fire Services Coordinator.
Darrell spent his time serving his community as a first responder or helping the community with the needs such as building ramps, repairing roofs, assisting the elderly with home repairs, delivering groceries to shut-ins, organizing fundraisers and surprising children with Christmas gifts.
He was like a brother or dad to all of his members at the department. He had a nick name for most of them. He worked very well with all the other chiefs and emergency services.
The Sylva town board had passed a resolution declaring December 10 to be “Darrell Woodards Day of Service in the town of Sylva”. He is greatly missed by his community, fire department and family.
