Kernersville Fire Chief Walter Summerville Died Wednesday Afternoon

Kernersville, NC– Kernersville Fire Chief Walter Summerville died Wednesday afternoon at the age of 55.

Kernersville Fire Marshal Tim Swain told News 2 that Kernersville Fire Chief Walter “Walt” Summerville died late Wednesday afternoon at his home from a possible heart attack after he left work.

Summerville died unexpectedly at the age of 55 leaving behind a wife and two children.

Summerville had 25 years of experience in fire service, starting in Boone, NC. He was hired by the Kernersville Fire Department in 1987 and worked his way up the ranks to Fire Chief in 2008.

Summerville’s funeral is Sunday at 3pm at First Christian Church on 1130 N. Main St., Kernersville.

This is the third firefighter death in a week.  Lieutenant David Tatum, 55, passed away Tuesday after complaints of feeling ill Monday while responding to a vehicle fire.  John McClelland Hall, a Deputy Fire Marshal with Bladen County Emergency Services passed away Wednesday night from heart issues.
