LODD – Raleigh Fire Lieutenant Herman Jones

RALEIGH – Raleigh Fire Lieutenant Herman Jones passed away Tuesday, January 22nd in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Lieutenant Jones was on duty Friday evening and reportedly suffered chest pains. He was transported to a local medical facility.

Firefighter Jones was assigned to Engine 10 (C-shift) in the southeastern portion of the city.

The arrangements are as follows:

Handled by Haywood Funeral Home, 2415 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th at Juniper Level Baptist Church, 9104 Sauls Road in Raleigh.

Visitation will be at 13:00 Saturday and the Service will be at 14:00 hours. Burial to follow in the Church Cemetery.

27-YEAR FIRE DEPARTMENT VETERAN HERMAN JONES DIES AT THE AGE OF 58

The City of Raleigh Fire Department lost one of its own on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Lt. Herman S. Jones, a 27-year veteran of the Raleigh Fire Department, died after suffering an apparent heart attack. Lt. Jones was on duty Friday, Jan. 18 at Fire Station 10 when he began to experience chest pains. He was transported to Wake Medical Center and then to UNC Hospital.

Lt. Jones began his service with the Raleigh Fire Department on May 5, 1980 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on June 16, 2001.

Lt. Jones is the third firefighter to die while on duty. On April 20, 1965, Lt. Paul Mimms, 41, died of an apparent heart attack while operating a pumper at a structure fire. On March 10, 1956, Lt. Vernon Smith, 44, died from injuries suffered after his pumper overturned on Nov. 14, 1952.

Incident Description: Lt. Jones was exercising behind Station 10, 2711 Sanderford Road (USNG: 17SQV15825789). When the alarm rang for a respiratory distress call, he ran back inside to respond. At the time, Jones complained to his Captain that he thought he had pulled his left hamstring. He did not complain about the pain anymore during the course of the day which included another medical assist call (shooting).


That night, Lt. Jones not feeling well, called his Captain on the phone from his cubicle @ 2355hrs. The Captain found Jones lying on a sofa in extreme pain. He was sweating, complaining of indigestion and pain in his left leg.

Station 10 personnel took Lt. Jones’ blood pressure which was 225/110 in his right arm. Upon examination of his left leg, it appeared flaccid and personnel could not find a pulse in Lt. Jones’ left foot.

Garner EMS responded to assist Lt. Jones at 2357hrs, at which time he was transported to Wake Medical Center. Tests indicated Lt. Jones was suffering from a torn aorta. Lt. Jones was later transferred to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill where he passed away from his injury on 01/22/2008.
